DENTAL BRIDGES

Missing tooth/teeth are no laughing matter when it comes to your dental health. Gaps (or spaces) left by missing tooth/teeth not only prevents you from smiling properly but more importantly they could cause bigger dental health problems when left untreated. May it be from extraction or trauma (injury), these gaps or spaces can lead to the drifting of the neighboring teeth out of position, hence creating more gaps in between remaining teeth. The empty spaces left by the missing tooth/teeth can also lead to the eruption of the opposing tooth from their original sockets. Other problems includes the impairment of the way you speak because gaps can alter the way words are pronounced or delivered, and can make your appearance inappropriate because gaps can also cause slacking in your face. Smile Studio Phuket Dental Clinic, we provide a lot of options in the treatment of missing tooth/teeth. Like Dental Implants or Partial Dentures, Dental Bridges are one of the solutions to eliminate these spaces between missing teeth that can cause a lot of problems with regards to your appearance and dental health as well.

WHAT ARE DENTAL BRIDGES ?

Dental Bridges are simply replacements for missing tooth/teeth that can recreate the look and functionality of your missing tooth or teeth. They are false teeth, also known as pontic, and they are fused in between two dental crowns. The dental crowns are then anchored to the teeth on each side of the pontic, hence, "bridging" them together. Dental Bridges are widely used in the field of cosmetic or restorative dentistry because of their durability and esthetic features. Theyappear and function similar to your natural teeth, more than that as compared to partial dentures because they remain in your mouth at all times, and they are less costly when compared to dental implants. They are recommended if you have one or a few teeth missing. There are three main types of Dental Bridges:

Traditional Fixed Bridge

This type of dental bridge is commonly used among other types of dental bridges. A Fixed bridge consists of a false tooth (pontic) that is attached in between two crowns that serves as anchors for either the neighboring teeth or a dental implant. Holding the pontic into place, the two dental crowns are placed by the capping them over the prepared teeth that functions as abutments. The pontic can either be made of metal, ceramics, or both (porcelain fused to metal). As the name suggests, this type of dental bridges are fixed and cannot be removed because they are permanently bonded to either the neighboring teeth or to a dental implant.

Maryland Bridges (Resin-Bonded Bridges)

This type of dental bridge is chosen mainly to preserve the surrounding teeth of the empty space to be filled, especially if they are found to be strong and healthy, or without large fillings. This is primarily because Maryland Bridges consists of a pontic that is fused in between two metal bands. These metal bands are then placed in position by bonding them to the adjacent teeth, instead of capping them with crowns, thereby eliminating the need to reduce the adjacent teeth that would serve as abutments.

Cantilever Bridges

This type of dental bridge, on the otherhand, is used when there is only one side of the gap with teeth present, that can be utilized as an abutment. With cantilever bridges, the pontic is anchored to one or more adjacent teeth on one side. This type of dental bridge, however, is not recommended for replacing missing teeth which would be subjected under heavy stress. They can be opted for in replacing teeth in areas that are susceptible to lower stress, such as the front teeth.

ALL CERAMIC/PFM/METAL (GOLD) BRIDGES

The All Porcelain Dental Bridges and Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Dental Bridges are tooth colored bridges. PFM dental bridges are usually used to restore back teeth where the forces of chewing and grinding are strongest. All Porcelain Dental Bridges are the most aesthetic and are used almost exclusively for front teeth where the need for strength is not as critical. Metal (or Gold) Dental Bridges are the most durable and offer the most precise fit. Gold Dental Bridges do not chip.
