What to Do in Phuket While Recovering from Dental Treatment

Table of Contents

Phuket is one of Thailand’s most popular travel destinations, famous for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, delicious cuisine, and unforgettable experiences. For many international patients, it’s also the perfect place to combine high-quality dental care with a relaxing holiday.

However, if you’ve travelled to Phuket for dental implants, bone grafting, or a full smile makeover, your recovery should always come first.

While it may be tempting to explore the island immediately after treatment, allowing your body enough time to heal is essential for achieving the best clinical outcome. Fortunately, Phuket offers plenty of relaxing, low-impact activities that let you enjoy your holiday without compromising your recovery.

This guide explains what you can safely do while recovering, when it’s appropriate to start sightseeing, and which activities should be avoided until you’ve fully healed.

The First 48–72 Hours: Focus on Rest

The first few days after major dental treatment are the most important for healing.

During the first 48 to 72 hours, your body is working hard to reduce inflammation, repair tissues, and begin the healing process.

During this period, you should:

  • Rest as much as possible
  • Take all prescribed medications exactly as instructed
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Eat soft foods
  • Apply cold compresses if recommended by your dentist

Short, gentle walks around your hotel or resort are perfectly acceptable, but avoid unnecessary physical activity.

You should also avoid:

  • Long sightseeing tours
  • Crowded markets
  • Heavy shopping
  • Long periods in Phuket’s midday heat
  • Stressful journeys through heavy traffic

Excessive heat can increase dehydration and raise blood pressure, which may contribute to additional swelling or bleeding.

Phase Two: Gentle Exploration After Swelling Improves

Once your swelling has significantly reduced—typically around Day 4 or Day 5—and your dentist confirms that healing is progressing well, you can begin enjoying some of Phuket’s more relaxing attractions.

Visit Central Phuket

If you’d like to leave your hotel while avoiding the tropical heat, Central Phuket is an excellent choice.

The shopping complex offers:

  • Air-conditioned comfort
  • Plenty of seating
  • Easy access to restaurants and cafés
  • Clean facilities
  • Minimal physical exertion

It’s also a convenient place to enjoy soft meals that are suitable during recovery.

Explore Old Phuket Town

Old Phuket Town is ideal for patients who want to experience local culture without strenuous activity.

The colourful streets feature a unique blend of Thai, Chinese, and Portuguese architecture, reflecting Phuket’s rich history.

You can spend a relaxing afternoon:

  • Walking at your own pace
  • Visiting cafés
  • Reading a book
  • Enjoying smoothies or soft desserts
  • Taking photographs of the historic buildings

Visit the Big Buddha and Local Temples

For a peaceful sightseeing experience, consider visiting Phuket’s famous temples during the cooler morning hours.

The Big Buddha offers spectacular panoramic views across the island, while Wat Chalong is Phuket’s largest and most significant Buddhist temple.

When visiting religious sites:

  • Choose routes with minimal stairs
  • Avoid walking for long periods
  • Dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and knees

Watch the Sunset at Promthep Cape

One of the most relaxing activities during recovery is watching Phuket’s famous sunset.

Promthep Cape and the nearby Windmill Viewpoint offer breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea without requiring significant physical effort.

A short drive followed by a peaceful evening watching the sunset is an excellent way to enjoy Phuket while allowing your body to continue healing.

Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

If you’d like to experience Thailand’s wildlife, consider visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary.

Locations such as Phuket Elephant Sanctuary allow visitors to observe and feed rescued elephants in a calm environment.

Choose gentle observation tours rather than physically demanding activities.

Enjoy a Relaxing Spa

Thailand is internationally known for its spa treatments and wellness experiences.

Once your dentist confirms you’re healing well, you may enjoy:

  • Foot massages
  • Aloe vera treatments
  • Relaxing body massages

However, avoid facial massages until your dentist advises they are safe, as pressure around the treatment area may interfere with healing.

Activities to Avoid During Recovery

Although Phuket offers countless exciting adventures, some activities should be postponed until your recovery is complete.

For at least the first week—or longer if recommended by your dentist—you should avoid:

  • Heavy exercise
  • Gym workouts
  • Scuba diving
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Water parks
  • Go-kart racing
  • Zipline adventures
  • Speedboat tours
  • Intense nightlife

Alcohol may increase bleeding and delay healing.

Similarly, speedboat trips to destinations such as James Bond Island or the Similan Islands can expose your jaw to repeated impact from rough ocean waves, potentially affecting the healing process.

Patients who have undergone sinus lift surgery or extensive bone grafting should be especially careful to avoid activities involving sudden pressure changes or vigorous physical movement.

Enjoy a Relaxing Recovery and a Better Result

Recovering after dental treatment doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors for your entire holiday.

By balancing rest with gentle sightseeing, you can enjoy many of Phuket’s beautiful attractions while giving your body the time it needs to heal properly.

Following your dentist’s instructions, avoiding strenuous activities, and choosing recovery-friendly experiences will help maximise both your treatment outcome and your holiday experience.

With the right care, your dental journey in Phuket can leave you with not only a healthier smile but also wonderful memories of one of Thailand’s most beautiful destinations.

International Sterilization Standards

Sterilization is a very essential process during a dental procedure. It reduces the potential risk of transmission of diseases which may occur due to living micro-organism deadliest bacteria & viruses. We are concerned about protecting our patients from infectious diseases. We meet or exceed all guidelines set forth by the ADA, OSHA, and the Center for Disease Control. We employ hospital cleanliness standards and sterilization techniques, so you know always that you are getting the best treatment money can buy at a fraction of the cost you would pay back home.

Surgery Upkeep :

At the beginning of the day the floors are thoroughly scrubbed with the disinfectants which leaves the place clean and smelling fresh. All carpeted/non carpeted areas are meticulously cleaned with a high power vacuum cleaner to get all the dust mites out and prevent air borne infections if any. The chairs and all moving/rotating parts are sprayed with antiseptic solution and wiped clean with a soft cloth. After every patient the same procedure is followed for the chairs to prevent cross infection.

All of our dental instruments are sterilized by autoclave with a high temperature up to 135 degree Celsius using a vaporizing effect created from high pressure pushing heat thoroughly all over and through every part of the instrument, even in very tiny spaces. At this temperature all known disease causing bacteria are known to be killed. This is the standard autoclaving procedure followed in Operation Theatres worldwide.

Additinally, we also use the Attest Biological Monitoring System by 3M ESPE to verify the effectiveness of our sterilization efforts. The 3M Attest sterilization is a proven and reliable system with a 20 year product history using biological indicator system for monitoring steam sterilization. This is used to ensure that our sterilization controls and standards are well assured and above those of required standards.

  • Has a self-contained biological indicators significantly reduce the possibility of contamination, minimizing false positives and ensuring more accurate results.
  • Incubator automatically crushes vial to release medium, making it safer and easier to use than other systems.
  • 14-vial capacity to meet the needs of both small and large offices.
  • See-through cover allows for easy observation and reading of indicator color change.
  • Dry-block design is pre-set to proper incubation temperature to ensure consistent, accurate results.
  • System is color-coded for quick reference and easy use.
Disposable materials :

We use a fresh, new pair of gloves for every patient that is disposed off immediately after the treatment is completed. In addition we use disposable masks, suction tips and plastic glasses. All local anesthetic is given from sealed syringes that are opened in front of you and disposed off immediately after treatment.
